Class Note 1981

Issue

January-February 2023

By now it must be pretty clear that we were a part of a significant development in the progression of Dartmouth. Five years before we matriculated, coeducation initiated on the Hanover Plain and progressed slowly through our class and finally reached parity of gender in the freshman class when we were seniors. This fall many of our class reunited in honor of the 50th year of coeducation, and Molly Sundberg Van Meter and Cathy McGrath ’80 organized a reception at the Sigma Delta house for the returning ’79, ’80, and ’81 members. Julie Koeninger took part in a special half-century celebration of women’s athletics as a part of Homecoming Weekend.

Even though she just relocated to the Upper Valley, Tracy Bennett traveled to complete the hike of a lifetime known as the Camino del Norte from San Sebastian to Santiago, Spain. It was “34 days, 588 miles (including getting lost), 63,219 feet of elevation, one blister, two rainbows, and innumerable memories.” She had accomplished the Camino Frances four years earlier. Susan Spencer and Sally Ankeny Reiley qualified for and ran in the Abbott World Marathon Majors World Championship at the London Marathon. The phrase “AARP years” takes on a different tone with these alumnae.

Jake Weinbaum took to the pristine trails of the Engadine region of the eastern Swiss Alps and stated the hikes were “magical with stunning scenery, perfectly marked and maintained trails, and the cheese—magnificent.”

Ted Hibben accompanied his father, class of ’52, to his 70th reunion, where he was elected president of the class and “most likely to make it to the 75th.” This is inspiring.

Peter Ley, John Westerfield, and Jeff Healy shared much happy laughter and fond memories in an autumn N.Y.C. get-together. The smiles were nonstop. Mark Matuschak and Geoff Hathaway reunited at the beautiful Marblehead, Massachusetts-based wedding for Mark’s son, Alex.

Sadly, President Emeritus James E. Wright passed away near the peak of foliage in the Upper Valley this fall. He is the only U.S. Marine veteran to have led an Ivy League school and meant so much to so many of us through his teaching, dedication, and friendship. His memory will live on in our hearts.
