Class Note 1963

Issue

November-December 2024

Excitement builds for our November 1-3 mini-reunion, which features the Saturday dedication of Lewinstein Athletic Center (formerly Alumni Gymnasium)—at 10-11:30 a.m., just prior to the Harvard Homecoming game—which will honor the extraordinary generosity of ’98 parents Diana and Steve Lewinstein. “As avid Big Green supporters of Dartmouth athletics and in recognition of the important role athletics play in the Dartmouth experience, we are delighted to help advance Dartmouth’s mission of athletic excellence,” Steve said in his statement. The gym renaming is a “change that signifies its upcoming renovation to improve existing facilities as well as the creation of a space that will add functionality, efficiency, and cutting-edge therapeutic tools to support the health and wellness of student-athletes,” the announcement further explained. “The renovation of the lobby and the development of a space to honor successful Big Green athletes will also occur.” Our class meeting will be earlier and dinner will be at Ariana’s Restaurant, Lyme, New Hampshire, according to mini-reunion chairs Jeff Nothnagle and Mike Prince.

“Americans and the Great War: A Postal History,” just published by Kevin Lowther, is one of many works and authors in the most informative and entertaining July feature by class newsletter editor Dave Schaefer that includes authors Arnie Katz, Dave Barker, Steve Macht, John W. Chamberlin, Larry Chapman’s spouse Bobbi, Peter Barton, Tom Chandler, and Nick Carney. Other authors in the class who come to mind are Paul Binder, John Merrow, Tom Holzel, Len Levitt, Sam Cabot’s wife Claire, Frank DeSerio, Steve Swirsky’s widow Joan, and no doubt many others.

Mike Prince and John Merrow continued their annual bike rides for worthy causes. Mike and Jeanne biked their 100-mile course through the New Hampshire countryside raising money for the Dartmouth Cancer Center, and John did 83 miles (his age) for Island Housing Trust, which creates affordable housing for qualified residents of Martha’s Vineyard, the well-known island off Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

I regret to report the passing of John R. Chamberlin, John Lehigh, and Bob Nassau. Read obituaries by Tige Harris on the DAM website.
