Class Note 1959
Issue
January-February 2025
Our 65th reunion is behind us. Thank you to all the classmates who made it a success. I had to cancel out at the last minute due to my wife’s illness, but all the reports I received from Barry Smith were great except for the attendance the last day. There were 45 classmates and about 75 attendees. We did well again, with 50.3 percent of our living classmates contributing to the Dartmouth College Fund. Thank you.
Terry Troy was impressed by the session on communicating using deep listening and engaging questioning to solve conflicts. He is considering bringing the concepts into his work with Twin Cities organizations. Terry has led an equity real estate firm in St. Paul, Minnesota, for decades. He still goes into the office daily. The business is participating in the affordable housing market. His other major community service has been the board chair for The Retreat in Wayseta, Minnesota, for 16 years. The Retreat is an alcohol treatment center that uses the Hazleton 12-step model. He and his wife have raised four children who have produced 15 grandchildren, resulting in 22 great-grandchildren.
Lee and Helen Gilliatt report that they have more than 40 oak trees down after Hurricane Helene hit them in Shelby, North Carolina. They did not lose electricity but dealing with their woods is a major problem. Lee retired from his pediatric medical practice 22 years ago to spend full time coaching cross country and leading the Young Life Program with Shelby high school students. He has recently retired a second time when he could no longer keep up with his high school runners. Lee and Helen’s son, Nathan ’87, was a classmate of my son Peter. Their daughter has given them three grandsons.
Tip Putnam read my appeal for more information about classmates and sent a nice email. The only problem is he didn’t give any news about his life in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Maybe next time he will relay some news that’s fit to print.
