Class Note 1958

Issue

January-February 2025

The class of 1958 had an active fall highlighted by its mini-reunion early in October. We celebrated the naming of Buddy Teevens Stadium at Memorial Field followed by the first Ivy home game against Penn that went our way. Hal Bernsen, class president, presided over the annual meeting that made quick work of the routine stuff such as confirming class dues, contributions to class projects, and the annual goals for the Dartmouth College Fund. The highlight of the meeting was the appearance of our two scholarship students, Shade Hargis ’27 from Safford, Arizona, and Amanda Adetula ’26 from Lagos, Nigeria. They were a study of contrasts. Shade’s hometown in Arizona is minuscule in the middle of the desert and most who graduate from the local high school go to work for the mines, prisons, or Walmart. Amanda on the other hand is from the largest city in Nigeria, a bustling urban center. Both face highly different cultures at Dartmouth that subject them to mental strains different from what they’ve experienced in their hometowns. The ready availability of mental health services has been a real plus for them as they acclimate to the College vibes. The class is eager to increase the value of the scholarship fund with a near-term goal of adding a third student pairing. John Trimble will lead that effort and our goal is to achieve it by June 2026. The one downer of the weekend was that its superb chair, Frank Gould, suffered a broken shoulder in a hiking fall and was experiencing its consequences while we were reveling! Frank is recovering without surgery at this point. While we were enjoying ourselves, Hurricane Milton was exploding into a monster storm that threatened the west coast of Florida, and it made landfall just three days after we left Hanover. West coasters in Naples Craig Haines, Jane Yusen, John Otis, Bill Allyn, and your secretary escaped damage, but Pete Durno on Boca Grande was not yet certain how his home fared. Larry Hampton helpfully chimed in that there are no hurricanes in Portugal—or alligators or boa constrictors!
