Charles McNeil Liddle III ’52

Charles McNeil Liddle III ’52 passed away on March 28 in Albany, New York. Chuck was born in Atlanta on November 2, 1930. He graduated from the Albany Academy in 1948, Dartmouth (cum laude) in 1952, and Tuck School of Business, where he earned his M.B.A. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi. He then served as a supply officer in the U.S. Navy for two years. While on shore leave in Venice, Italy, he met Nancy Ann Hyatt, a recent graduate of Indiana University and stewardess with American Airlines. Their romance developed and they married in 1955. They settled in Albany, where Chuck joined his father at Austin & Co. Insurance Agency. He had a long career at Austin, becoming president in 1964 and retiring as chairman in 2008. He was active in insurance industry affairs and helped lay the groundwork for standardization, innovation, and automation for the insurance industry. Chuck was a trusted leader in the community and served on the board of many institutions in the Albany area and beyond. Chuck was also an outdoor enthusiast and traveler and loved to spend time in the Adirondack Mountains, where he hiked all 46 high peaks, becoming a “46er” in 1988. Chuck was predeceased by his wife, Nancy, and son Christopher. He is survived by son Matthew and his wife, Nancy; daughter Sara and her husband, T.J.; and three grandchildren.
