Charles Harrison Weed ’52

Charles Harrison Weed ’52 passed away on August 12, 2017, in Lubbock, Texas. Charles was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, on January 17, 1930, and he came to Dartmouth after graduating from Knox County Central High School in Knoxville, Tennessee. At Dartmouth Charles was a government major, a member of Cabin & Trail and publicity director for the Winter Carnival committee. Charles then served in the U.S. Army and, while studying Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey, California, married Elaine Ames in June of 1953. Elaine was a ’53 graduate of Mount Holyoke College. Following military service, which also included a year at the Harvard University Soviet Studies program and more than a year in Vietnam, Charles joined the Central Intelligence Agency, serving in many locations for the next 30 years. In retirement, Charles and Elaine settled near family in Lubbock, Texas, and enjoyed extensive travel. Charles is survived by Elaine, his wife of 64 years; children Melanie, Harrison and Jonathan ’80; Jonathan’s wife, Claudia ’81; and grandchildren Kelley ’10 and Zachary ’13. Charles’ father, Samuel, was a member of the Dartmouth class of 1923, and his uncle, Frederick, was a member of the class of 1914.
