Charles H. Hood ’51
Charles H. Hood ’51, a longtime leader and supporter of the Hood Museum of Art and a key participant in the museum’s current expansion, died February 8 at his home in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Dartmouth was at the heart of Charlie’s extraordinarily widespread cultural, educational and philanthropic interests. He was a member of the Alumni Council, chaired the Alumni Fund and received a Dartmouth Alumni Award and a Spirit of ’51 Award. Through the Charles H. Hood Foundation he was a major supporter of education (trustee of Lesley University), the arts (Boston Ballet and Boston Symphony Orchestra) and organizations serving the needs of children and advancing human health. Charlie served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the Boston Museum of Science. He was a director of the State Street Bank and Trust Co. for 25 years. Charlie was a business executive for many years with H.P. Hood and Sons, where he held leadership positions in information systems and as treasurer and member of the company’s board of directors. At Dartmouth Charlie was an English major and a member of Sigma Chi. He earned an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy before joining the Hood company. Charlie is survived by his wife, Judy. His late father, Harvey P. Hood, class of 1918, chaired the College’s board of trustees.
