Calvin E. Knights ’51

Calvin E. Knights ’51 died on May 4. A resident of Lebanon, New Hampshire, he and his wife, Joyce, had been married for 75 years. Cal grew up in nearby Norwich, Vermont, and lived there for much of his life. He attended Norwich grade schools and Hanover High School. He spent only one year at Dartmouth and attended the University of Delaware and Columbia University. He served for four years in the U.S. Army (1943-47) in the Philippines as a first lieutenant. At Dartmouth Cal was a member of Chi Phi. He and a fraternity brother installed and ran the old rope ski tow on the Hanover golf course across from Occom Pond. Love of the outdoors was a central theme in Cal’s life. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, skiing, hockey, golf, horseback riding, water sports, and his devoted dogs. Cal purchased and developed several properties in and around Hanover, including the Mobil Oil station on Main Street. He contributed to the community as a member of the Norwich Lions Club, the Upper Valley Development Council, and the Blue Mountain Forest Association.
