Brewster Sturtevant ’52

Brewster Sturtevant ’52—a lifelong resident of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, retired insurance executive, and local historian—passed away on January 14 at home. He was a retired partner of the Mutual Insurance Agency in Springfield. He served in both the Navy and Navy Reserve for nearly 30 years, including in the Korean and Vietnam wars, retiring with the rank of commander. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he attended high school, he moved to Longmeadow in 1933. At Dartmouth he majored in geography and was a member of Kappa Sigma. He later was a member of the Dartmouth Club of the Pioneer Valley. He was a member and longtime supporter of First Church of Christ, serving as a church deacon, and was the church’s historian at the time of his passing. Brewster and his wife, Ann, were very active in civic and environmental organizations in and around Longmeadow and the Connecticut River Valley and in historical associations of central Massachusetts. Brewster was a board member of the Longmeadow Cemetery Association, a former president of the Longmeadow Historical Society, and a member of the Longmeadow Historic District Commission. After Ann and Brewster were married, they spent their honeymoon on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Following Ann’s death in 2009, Brewster continued to visit North Truro, Massachusetts, where he spent time with friends. He leaves sons Dwight and Kent, brother Windsor, and two grandchildren.
