Betsy Louise May Hudson ’81

Betsy Louise May Hudson ’81 died February 10. She was born in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from Keene (New Hampshire) High School in 1977 as valedictorian. She graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth in 1981 with an A.B. in comparative literature. She and classmate Thomas Grenville Hudson II married in 1981 and raised daughters Sally and Anne. An accomplished musician, Betsy was an oboist in the Dartmouth Symphony and Keene State Symphony orchestras. Betsy worked at Yankee Books in Dublin, New Hampshire, as a book editor and a contributor to Yankee Magazine and then with the National Security Agency in Washington, D.C. Home base became Maryland, though the family spent eight years in Germany, where Betsy achieved remarkable fluency in German, in addition to the French and Italian she learned while at Dartmouth. Betsy also acquired a master’s in education from Boston University. During her three decades in Columbia, Maryland, Betsy taught English as a second language at Howard Community College and was an active member of St. John United Church and the Bryant Woods Elementary School Partnership. The family summer residence in Portland, Maine, was Betsy’s happy place. Betsy is survived by her husband, daughters and sons-in-law, two grandchildren, two sisters, one brother, and 10 nieces and nephews. The family asks that donations be made in Betsy’s name to the Iris Music Project or the Monadnock Conservancy.
