Words of Wisdom

Filmmakers Phil Lord ’97 and Chris Miller ’97 speak at Commencement.

On June 2 their sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, landed in theaters. On June 11, the pair landed at the podium to address the graduating class of 2023. They got started 20 years ago by writing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, won an Oscar for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and this year delivered Cocaine Bear, which they coproduced.

“Life is hard, and it’s nice to have a moment of joy,” Miller has said of their comedic output. Or, as Lord implored students in a video message posted several weeks ahead of the ceremony: “Please hire us when we’re old and need insurance.”
