She runs half-marathons. She rowed on the women’s team in College and was coxswain for the U.S. women’s paralympic crew that competed in London in 2012. Stein is no stranger to pushing herself athletically—and for years she worked to raise money for Dartmouth athletics.
In 2023, she shifted gears and now leads bike tours in the Lake Como region of Italy. She takes groups with varying experience on challenging mountainous routes that tower around the lake and for wine and tasting tours. An art history major, she likes to share local World War II history with riders, including the nearby village where Italian dictator Benito Mussolini spent his final days in 1945.
“Her passion for cycling is more than just an outdoor escape—it’s a way of life,” says Stein’s boss, Casey Thompson of Bike It! Bellagio.
Stein, who lives a stone’s throw from the lake with her partner, Mike Wood ’10, Th’11, often leads cyclists up to the Ghisallo Pass, site of a famed cycling museum and an annual bike race. “I get quite scared at the descent,” Stein admits. “I prefer the climb—you get the view of the lake and mountains the whole way.”
