Wintering Over
Nearly 800 undergrads spent at least part of the six-week break between fall and winter terms on campus, a sharp increase over previous winterims. About 100 of the 360 who stayed for the entire break are international students, who may have been wary about leaving the country since stricter immigration policies were implemented.
“The Urgency of Now”
Bernice A. King, CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, focused on “the urgency of now—a time for truth and action,” during a fireside chat as part of the College’s MLK celebration. King is the daughter of the civil rights icon and his late wife, Coretta Scott King, who founded the center.
On the Right Track
Men’s and women’s track and field in late January hosted the Ivy vs. America East Challenge, the final home meet of the indoor season. Both teams placed first.
Headed to Oxford
Rhodes scholars Esmeralda Abreu Jerez ’25 and Noah da Silva ’25 will become the 82nd and 83rd Dartmouth students to join the scholarship at the University of Oxford. Abreu Jerez plans to complete master’s programs in epidemiology and health systems, while earth sciences and biology major Da Silva plans to conduct research on snails.

Engineering prof Eric Fossum, who pioneered an image sensor that revolutionized digital imaging and remains the core technology behind about 7 billion cameras produced each year, was honored with the National Academy of Engineering’s 2026 Draper Prize for Engineering.
Pirated books
More than 130 Dartmouth faculty whose work was used without permission by AI company Anthropic were part of a landmark $1.5-billion class-action settlement last year involving more than 500,000 pirated works.
Arts and Nature
In January, the College introduced an effort to support wellness and alleviate stress by connecting students to arts, culture, and nature experiences through Arts and Nature Rx. The free yearlong pilot is a partnership with Atlanta-based Art Pharmacy, which prescribes activities from group hikes to dance and craft workshops.
Revolution Reconsidered
The Hood Museum’s current exhibit—timed for the nation’s 250th and running through August 8—probes the history, myth, and propaganda of artwork related to its early years. The show explores how imagery shaped Americans’ sense of national identity and can frame an understanding of the past.
