On the Wall
Philadelphia artist Alexandra Tyng’s painting of Phil Hanlon ’77, the College’s 18th president, was unveiled in late October and now hangs near portraits of his predecessors in Baker Library.

Cupid’s Arrow
The English and creative writing department and Literary Arts Bridge hosted a short story writing contest last fall  for undergrads on the theme of love. The winning story will be performed at the Hop on Valentine’s Day as part of the hit public radio series Selected Shorts

Honoring Veterans
Baker bells played the hymns of each military branch at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day. At the annual recognition breakfast, President Beilock pledged to double the number of undergrad veterans—currently there are 13, plus 60 in the graduate schools—and enhance ROTC’s presence, which has 32 cadets this year, up from an average 15 to 20 during the past decade.

Watch Every Shot
Hockey fans now can get a closer look at the action, thanks to the four-sided videoboard recently suspended above center ice in Thompson Arena. An anonymous donor made the $1.5 million project possible.

Latin Grammy Winners
In an October performance celebrating Venezuelan music, trumpet virtuoso Pacho Flores and cuatro master Héctor Molina joined the Dartmouth College Wind Ensemble in two world premieres commissioned by the Hop.

Footloose
Student-led troupes—Wild Things Dance Workshop, Fusion, Dartmouth Classical Ballet Theatre, Dartmouth Dance Ensemble, Street Soul, Hokupa’a, and Sugarplum—performed a mix of styles in a November dance showcase.

Kudos
In October, President Beilock and Geisel health economist Carrie Colla ’01 were elected to the National Academy of Medicine—one of the top honors in the field of health and medicine.

Street Smarts
The Hanover Bike Walk Committee is mulling a plan to add bike lanes to major town streets to create “mobility options that are safe and equitable.”

Animal House
The town’s zoning board is considering a petition to change the allowed use of the former Alpha Delta house—which inspired the 1978 film Animal House—from office space back to student housing. The College revoked the frat’s charter in 2015 after multiple disciplinary violations.

Building Boom …
A group of alumnae announced plans for another new residence hall down West Wheelock Street. Alumnae Hall honors the College’s more than 35,000 alumnae and is funded thus far by 27 women who each committed $1 million. The dorm will be part of a new gateway to campus from Ledyard Bridge.

… With More to Come
In July the College purchased three units on the other side of the street—18, 20, and 22 West Wheelock, historically occupied by students—to “eventually” develop into College housing, according to Josh Keniston, senior VP of operations.
