Alfred “Monk” C. Bancroft Jr. ’57
Alfred “Monk” C. Bancroft Jr. ’57 of Fayston, Vermont, died on December 10, 2017, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Monk grew up in Essex Falls, New Jersey, and graduated from Kimball Union Academy. He was a member of the ski team, track team and Alpha Delta Phi. After serving his military obligation in Japan, he was discharged as a captain in the Air Force. Monk’s career was in insurance. He retired in 1998 as president of David MacGregor Co. of Nutley, New Jersey. He coached for 10 years in the junior football league. Well known for his skiing prowess—especially as the New Jersey State Champion in slalom and downhill in the 1960s—Monk was president of the Montclair (New Jersey) Ski Club and its race chairman for 13 years. His favorite place was Mad River Glen, Vermont, where he joined the ski patrol. He moved there in retirement. He raced for the Rotary Club and led his family to victory twice in the annual family race. Monk was also an active golf and tennis player, sailor, hiker, bicycle rider, builder of stone walls and a renowned reciter and writer of limericks. Dartmouth was important to Monk. He interviewed candidates for more than 35 years, was an officer of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, class mini-reunion chairman, host of four minis and a regular at reunions, Homecoming and mini-reunions. Monk is survived by his wife, Jane, brother Thomas, three children and three grandchildren.
