Alec Gray ’54

Alec Gray ’54 passed away April 27 in Monticello, Minnesota. Born in Washington, D.C., Alec attended school in Virginia and graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1950. At Dartmouth he earned a degree in history, served on the Athletic Council, was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, and managed the swim team. He served in the U.S. Army, conducting counter-intelligence work in Japan, followed by duty in the Army Reserve. He then returned to the United States and started his business career in New York. Pan Am took him to Minneapolis, where he met and married his first wife, Katherine. In 1972 they relocated to the Chicago area, where he continued to lead the regional Pan Am sales team until Pan Am folded in 1991. Alec continued his career in travel industry sales, eventually retiring from the Chicago Radisson Hotel. A devoted father and grandfather, he supported and participated in the various activities pursued by his children and grandchildren. He was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan, played tennis well into his 80s, and welcomed all with his warm smile and happy demeanor. Alec was predeceased by his parents, Welles and Arbutus, and Kathy. Succeeding him are wife Mary; children Sandy and Beth; stepsons Mike, Chris, Rob, and Chuck; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
