Addison M. Bowman ’57
Addison M. Bowman ’57 passed peacefully on December 15, 2023, at home in Hawaii surrounded by his family. Addie graduated from Mechanicsburg (Pennsylvania) High School. He majored in English and was active in Phi Kappa Psi, WDBS (four years), the pre-law club, and Navy ROTC. He served on the USS Saint Paul, flagship of the 7th Fleet and with a homeport in Japan. He earned his law degree from Dickinson Law School and his master of laws at Georgetown. His first job was public defender in Washington, D.C., trying murder, rape, and robbery cases in U.S. District Court. He joined the Georgetown Law School faculty in 1967 and was tenured as full professor in 1970. He defended anti-war protesters. Addie moved in 1975 to the University of Hawaii, where he taught criminal law, evidence, and professional responsibility. He conducted a training program for judges in Micronesia, Palau, and Samoa. He was appointed professor of law emeritus. In 1995 he partially retired and moved to the Big Island to build a house and raise his family on the slopes of a dormant volcano, Mauna Kea. He coached and refereed in a soccer program. His orchard produced oranges, lemons, and grapefruit. Until 2005 he mediated appellate cases, acted as arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau, and consulted on legal malpractice cases. He served Dartmouth as an admissions interviewer (10 years) and alumni fund agent (seven years). Addie is survived by his wife, Jo Kim, and children Michael, Max, Eli, and Noa.
