W. Dale Brougher ’44
W. Dale Brougher ’44 died at home in York, Pennsylvania, on July 14, 2010. Dale graduated from Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, and came to Dartmouth. He then spent three years in the Army Air Force, becoming an instructor in P-47 fighter planes, and returned to Dartmouth to graduate in 1946. Dale was the founder and CEO of Brocker Rebar Co. Inc., which he formed in York in 1949. The business grew to include five additional reinforcing steel fabricating plants in the mid-Atlantic region, as well as Coastal Steel Co. Inc. in Baltimore. In 1999 he sold the rebar operations and retired. Dale served as the national president of the concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, the industry trade association in Chicago, in 1984-85. He served on many boards in York and York County and was a life member of the York Fair. Dale had a passion for flying that began in his teenage years, and he continued as a private pilot for more than 60 years. He shared with his wife a love of dogs and gave a home to more than 25 dogs. He was a member of Adopt-a-Family and the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Florida, and the York County SPCA and Dreamwrights Youth and Family Theater in York. He was an avid golfer and a member of golf clubs in York, Palm Beach and Southampton, New York. His wife of 36 years, Nancy, survives him, as do son Peter, stepson Robert and five grandchildren. His daughter Ann predeceased him.
