Thomas Henry Preacher ’72

Thomas Henry Preacher ’72 died on May 1 in Davenport, Iowa, after a six-year battle with cancer. Tom came to Dartmouth from the Iowa Quad Cities. At the College he was a member of Pi Lambda Phi and Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude as a philosophy major. From Dartmouth he went on to Brown University to pursue graduate studies in philosophy, then to the University of Iowa School of Law, from which he graduated in 1980. Tom had a long, successful career as an attorney, culminating in his appointment as district associate judge for Scott County, Iowa, in August 2008. Tom married his beloved wife of 27 years, Teri, on October 20, 1984, and they went on to raise sons Andrew ’09 and Charles (Davidson ’10). Tom was an aficionado of the Tower Room at Baker Library, as he loved to read and developed his own personal library of more than 4,000 books. He enjoyed history and art history and was an enthusiastic traveler throughout Russia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and even the Vatican. In this country he visited historic battlefields, among them Shiloh, Appomattox and Valley Forge. Through all of this he found time to serve on the ethics committee of St. Luke’s/Genesis Hospitals and was also very active in his church. His was a life truly well lived and, sadly, all too short. Our sincere condolences go out to Teri, Andrew, Charles and his larger family and friends.
