Gilbert E. Stokes ’41
Jan - Feb 2013
Gilbert E. Stokes ’41 of Marion, Massachusetts, died on August 3, 2007. He was part of a strong Dartmouth family tradition: His grandfather, Dudley Leavitt Stokes, and father Leroy Stokes graduated from Dartmouth, and Gilbert entered the Dartmouth class of 1940 with his twin brother, the late Gordon Stokes. However, after sophomore year Gil contracted equine encephalitis while on a fossil expedition for the College. He recovered a year later and joined the class of 1941. The illness kept him out of the draft, and for 39 years after graduation (until 1983) he taught biology at Tabor Academy in Marion, where he also served as chairman of the science department. In addition he chaired a program involving several secondary schools working with the Woods Hole Oceanography Institution. In 1972 he became Tabor’s first dean, serving in that office for seven years. The Tabor biology department was named in his honor. He is survived by his children Douglas and Stephanie and granddaughters Caroline and Rachel.
