Forbes Delany ’43


Forbes Delany ’43 died March 31 in Greenwich, Connecticut. Forbes grew up in Scarsdale, New York, and graduated from Mamaroneck (New York) High School. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Phi Delta Alpha, Interfraternity treasurers’ council and Navy V-12. He majored in chemistry and zoology. Forbes graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and completed his studies at Columbia’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1945. He was attached to the Marine Corps and supervised a medical center in Tsingtao, China. In 1950 he married University of Michigan graduate Mary Straatsma. After his discharge from the service Forbes became the senior attending radiologist at Greenwich Hospital and the chief of its medical staff. In addition he established a six-physician radiological group practice with two offices. He returned to medical school to become board certified in nuclear medicine and performed the first CAT scan at the Greenwich Hospital in 1977. He joined the Greenwich board of health in 1997 and was the physician of record until 2007. Forbes was elected to the Greenwich representative town meeting in 1998 and served through 2006. Always active in Dartmouth alumni affairs, “Koo” served on the class executive committee, DMS dean’s council and reunion giving committee and as class agent, fraternity/sorority agent, class vice president, regional agent and chair and doctors/lawyers coordinator. He is survived by his wife, Mary, five sons, including Brunn ’87 one daughter, their spouses and 12 grandchildren.
