Dort Sharon Bigg Jr. ’52

Dort Sharon Bigg Jr. ’52, of Turner, Maine, died August 17, 2012, at Hospice House of Androscoggin in Auburn, Maine. He was born in 1930, came to Dartmouth in 1948 from Leavitt Institute in Turner, Maine, and graduated in 1952. He was very active in high school and he continued to be active at Dartmouth throughout his adult life. In College he majored in English and was a member of Alpha Delta Phi, Bait & Bullet and the Forensic Society. In 1955 he graduated cum laude from Boston University School of Law, where he was the editor-in chief of its law review. Dort first joined Orr and Reno Law Firm of Concord, New Hampshire, and, in 1957, he moved to the Wiggin and Nourie Law Firm in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1959 he was appointed assistant attorney general and assistant U.S. attorney of New Hampshire. He became senior partner of Wiggin and Nourie in the 1970s and retired in 2005. Although well known for his professional accomplishments, he was probably best known as a sportsman. Dort pursued his passion in skin and scuba diving, focusing on exploring sunken ships throughout New England and the Caribbean. Dort also expanded upon his early love of hunting, and amassed a world-renowned collection of exotic and domestic mounted animals. His wife of 32 years, Meredith Mason Small Bigg; sons Dort III, William, Patrick and Daniel; their spouses and partners; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter survive him.
