Peter Newkirk Caress ’91

Peter Newkirk Caress ’91 of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully August 1 after a courageous fight with cancer. Peter was raised in Annandale, Virginia, graduating from J.E.B. Stuart/Jefferson Tech High School. He arrived at Dartmouth in the fall of 1987. At Dartmouth Peter was a member of the Green Key Society and involved in the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra and the radio station. He graduated as a computer science major in 1991. Peter then obtained a master’s in electrical engineering at Purdue University. He worked as a computer engineer with GL Communications, where he developed telecommunications equipment. He was active in the community theater scene designing award-winning lighting schemes for numerous productions in the Washington, D.C., area. Peter is survived by his wife, Sunitha; parents Edward and Virginia; siblings Rebecca and James; an aunt; an uncle; and nieces and nephews. Family and friends cherished his quiet demeanor, dry wit, and remarkable intelligence. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to a local community theater or Fight Colorectal Cancer.
