James J. Conroy III ’51 died on June 19 in Lexington, Virginia. Jim left Dartmouth after his sophomore year but remained a staunch fan of the College throughout his life, calling his years in Hanover among the happiest of his life. He earned bachelor’s and law degrees from George Washington University. He established a general law practice in 1956, specializing in real estate, wills and estates, corporate matters and civil litigation. For more than 40 years he was also a commissioner in chancery for the circuit court of Fairfax County, Virginia. Jim and his wife, Bette, shared a love of travel, making more than a dozen trips to Europe. Other interests included classical music, literature, theater, art, Oriental rugs, and French wine. He was also a contributor to his community, serving as president of the local elementary PTA and as president of the Rotary Club of Fairfax, of which he was a dedicated member for more than 60 years. Daughter Helen was a member of Dartmouth’s class of 1978.
