Henry Mead Doremus ’37, D.V.M., died at Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, Florida, on November 9, 2014. Hank grew up in a family with deep roots in the Newark, New Jersey, area. He attended Montclair Academy and then entered Dartmouth, where he majored in biology and honed his considerable outdoorsman skills and graduated cum laude. Hank then received a fellowship from Cornell University, where he completed his master’s in biology in 1938. While at Cornell he met Helen Borchmann, a sophomore in Cornell’s School of Veterinary Medicine. They were married on February 21, 1941; they were partners for 61 years, until her death in 2002. The pair decided to practice medicine together, and Hank completed his D.V.M. in June 1946. The family moved to Lincoln Park, New Jersey, and started the Doremus Animal Hospital nearby in Cedar Grove. During the next 12 years they grew the animal hospital into a thriving practice. The family then moved to Stowe, Vermont, to build the Green Mountain Animal Hospital in South Burlington, Vermont. They sold the hospital two years later and Hank began a 20-year career with the University of Vermont as a professor of pharmacology and director of research animal facilities. They retired to Vero Beach in 1980. He then devoted his time to the Vero Beach Humane Society. Survivors include son Peter and his wife, Jain; daughter Whitney and her partner, Shannon; son Gregory and his wife, Anne; grandsons Jeffrey, Theodore and Luke and his wife, Rachel; and great-grandsons Max and Owen.
