Class Note 1953. As I write this, our part of New Hampshire is suffering from a “high-alert” drought. We’ve had very little rain all summer and have been asked to conserve water wherever possible.
As I write this Dartmouth Commencement exercises are taking place on the Green. Fortunately, the cool and rainy weather we’ve been experiencing all spring has lifted and the sun is shining on the class of 2025.
Dear classmates, as I write this in April, Hanover is currently suffering through the usual New England turnover of winter as it grudgingly departs the scene for spring.
This is my second Class Notes column as your class secretary. I’ll never be able to replace our beloved Mark Smoller, but I hope to follow his lead as I attempt to bring you news of the class of 1953 from Kendal at Hanover.
Sherwood Norman Salitsky ’53 died November 16, 2009. Sherwood excelled early on as a violinist and was selected for the Pennsylvania All State Orchestra and later played professionally with the Lehigh Valley Symphony.
Phillip Myron Elbert ’53 died unexpectedly on August 11, 2009, in the Oak Park (Illinois) Hospital. Phil came to Dartmouth from Proviso Township High School, then living in Maywood, Illinois.
H. Elton Clark ’53 died on September 9, 2009, of Parkinson’s disease in Glendale, California. At Dartmouth he majored in mathematics and government and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Following a commission in the U.S.
Norman Douglas Cassel ’53 died on October 10, 2009, at his home in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Doug entered Dartmouth from the Principia Upper School, where he was an accomplished three-sport athlete.
