William Patrick Knox ’57

William Patrick Knox ’57, a much-respected geophysicist, died at his Lakewood, Colorado, home on January 31, 2009. He also had a home in Contoocook, New Hampshire. Pat grew up in Oceanside, New York, with his parents and three brothers, including James ’55. After graduation from Dartmouth with a major in geology, Pat obtained a master’s in geophysics from the University of Minnesota. He worked for a number of mining and minerals exploration companies over his distinguished career, including Gold Fields Mining Co., Sierra Geophysical Services, AMAX Exploration and New Jersey Zinc Co. He also worked as a self-employed geophysical consultant on projects throughout North America. To his work Pat brought enthusiasm, expertise and remarkable scientific, mathematical and technical abilities. To his life he brought devotion to his friends and his family, including his many nephews and nieces living across the United States. “Uncle Pat” was interested in all his relatives—generous, thoughtful and caring. A man of intelligence, wit and humor, Pat was regarded with affection by his family and friends and he will be deeply missed. Slowed by a heart condition in recent years, Pat valued the assistance he received from his friends and relatives. They celebrated his life at a service shortly after his death.
