William Martin Hallagher ’47

William Martin Hallagher ’47 died at his home in Lincoln, New Hampshire, on December 2, 2014. He was born in Denmark, where his father worked for Texaco. In 1939 his father was transferred to New York and the family moved to Scarsdale, where Bill attended high school. He was accepted in the naval V-12 pilot training program at Dartmouth in 1943. After naval service he returned to Hanover, joined Tri Kap, was on the ski team and participated in WDCR. He majored in government and graduated in 1949 and from Tuck in 1950. He was employed by the Texas Co. at all levels of the retail business, living variously in Hoboken, New Jersey, Manchester, New Hampshire, Boston and, when he became a market analyst in New York City, Pleasantville, New York. There he served for more than 10 years as an active and popular Boy Scoutmaster and senior warden at St. John’s Episcopal Church. In 1986 he retired to Lincoln to enjoy his family, the mountains, skiing and golf. He and his late wife, Jean, were especially supportive of the North Country Center for the Arts. In addition to his many local activities he served the class as vice president (1997-2012), reunion committee member (1997, 2007) mini-reunion chairman (1988-98) and webmaster (2009-13). His family includes a number of Dartmouth alumni: father-in-law Sherman Adams, class of 1920, and brothers-in-law Samuel ’59 and William ’45 Freese (all deceased); son William ’74 and daughter Anne ’81. He is survived by four children.
