William MacFarland Jones ’43
William MacFarland Jones ’43 died January 16, 2015. Bill graduated from Highland Park (Illinois) High School, where he was class president, a member of the student council, National Honor Society and dramatics club, played football and was on the swimming team. At Dartmouth he majored in actuarial mathematics, was a member of Delta Upsilon and the Inter-fraternity and Inter-dormitory councils, was advertising manager of the Jack-O-Lantern, played freshman football and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating from Dartmouth in December 1942 Bill joined the Navy as ensign. After completing his officer training he married Betty Wampler and then left for duty in Noumea, New Caledonia, as a weather forecaster. After the war Bill spent a year with General Electric in Schenectady, New York, before entering Harvard Business School. In1948, M.B.A. in hand, he joined Thompson Products in Cleveland as an industrial engineer. During those early years Bill taught accounting at Western Reserve University. Eventually Bill became manager of the electronics division at Thompson and in 1959 was promoted to group vice president. In 1963 Bill bought a small electronics firm, Cleveland Machine Controls. By retirement the company had 600 employees and offices in three U.S. cities and four countries in Europe. In 1990 he was named Entrepreneur of the Year in northeastern Ohio. Retirement gave him more time to focus on education and theater causes and to travel extensively. Betty died in 2006. Bill is survived by his companion, Jane, daughters Berry, Bambi, Bobbi and Becky and four grandchildren.
