William Emery Ullmann ’54

William Emery Ullmann ’54 passed away on September 27, 2015, in Pocomoke, Maryland. Bill came to Dartmouth from Chicago, where he attended Chicago Latin School. He attended Dartmouth for one semester and then finished his degree at the University of Arizona. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Panama. After discharge he decided to start a ranch south of Eagle Butte, South Dakota. After a time the ranch headquarters was moved to McLaughlin, South Dakota. Bill was active in Stockgrowers and was a member of the board of West River Telephone Cooperative, acting as president for many years. In 1982 he started building Saguaro, a 39-foot sailboat in a hanger on the ranch, completing the task in 1991. His travels on the boat through the years took him on the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, across the Gulf of Mexico, up the East Coast to Boston and back south to Venezuela. He also sailed to the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. When his blue-water adventures ended Bill settled in Pocomoke, tinkering with the Saguaro and helping friends with their boating projects. Bill is survived by his wife, Rita, and children Holly, Angela, Debbie, Joyce, Dallas and John.
