Warren Bergstrom Thompson ’43

Warren Bergstrom Thompson ’43 died March 24, 2012, at the Indiana Veterans Home in Lafayette, the College has recently learned. He grew up in Lafayette and graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1939. He attended Dartmouth, his father’s alma mater, for one year, when he was a member of the Debating Team. He then attended Indiana University. In 1943 he enlisted and served in General Patton’s Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge. After military service Warren returned to Indiana University and received his law degree in 1949. Warren then joined his father’s law firm, where he remained until 1961, when he became the Tippecanoe Circuit County Judge, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. After retirement he served as senior judge in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties. In 1944 Warren married Margaret Riggs, who died in 1981. In 1985 he married Mona Franklin, who survives him. Warren was an antique car enthusiast and was very proud of his 1975 Avanti. He built his own home. Stories abound about his comments in the courtroom, his easy, friendly manner and his wide interest and understanding of human frailties; he could communicate easily with persons from all walks of life. As well as his wife, Warren is survived by daughter Andrea, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a stepdaughter and a stepgrandchild.
