Walter Lindenthal ’50

Walter Lindenthal ’50 died peacefully on October 27, 2010, surrounded by his family at the Mark Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. While at the College “Lindy” played hockey and lacrosse and was a member of the Glee Club and Kappa Kappa Kappa. He received his M.B.A. from Tuck in 1951. Having entered Dartmouth from Concord (New Hampshire) High School, he lived and worked in several places before winding up back in New Hampshire on 50 acres in Meriden in 1993. Tuck professor of marketing Al Frey played a key role in influencing Walt to enter the retailing industry, which he did with R.H. Macy in New York following graduation. After 10 years with Macy, he joined the JCPenney Co. to initiate its sporting goods business. Another 10 years passed, following which he became affiliated with Herman’s Sporting Goods, a division of W.R. Grace, a book distribution company in Chicago of which he was CEO and finally two sporting goods retailers in Houston as VP and CEO. Following his retirement in 1993 he became an international consultant buying and selling sporting goods. Walt was survived by his beloved wife, “Ro,” their children Mary Elisabeth, Kathryn, James and John and 10 grandsons.
