Thomas Ludlow Papst ’52

Thomas Ludlow Papst ’52 of Bluffton, South Carolina, passed away at home on October 26, 2015. Tom was born on June 14, 1930, in Pittsburgh and prepared for college at Mountain Lakes High School in New Jersey. He graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in sociology and was a member of Theta Chi and outdoor organizations Dartmouth Outing Club, Cabin & Trail and Bait & Bullet. In late 1952 he married Joan Snider, formerly of Washington, Pennsylvania. Tom spent his 38-year career in retailing, first with W.T. Grant Co. and then a lengthy 26-year career with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). He and his family lived in Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Germany and South Korea. His most challenging assignment was in Korea, where he was general manager for all AAFES operations. Upon retirement he and Joan lived in Dahlonega, Georgia, before moving in 2004 to Sun City, Bluffton, South Carolina, where he spent many happy hours kayaking, biking and swimming when not enjoying cruises with Joan. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan; children Thomas Jr., Susan ’81, Linda ’82 and Kathryn; nine grandchildren, including Kathryn Bowman ’10; two step-grandchildren; and his sister.
