Thomas John Sheehan ’49

Thomas John Sheehan ’49 died on May 24 at his home in Gainesville, Florida. Tom was raised in St. Albans, New York, and came to Dartmouth from Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception High School in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the Marines before coming to Dartmouth in the Navy V-12 program. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell in horticulture and spent 37 years teaching and doing research in the ornamental horticulture department at the University of Florida. Tom’s specialty was orchids; he was a world-renowned expert and received many awards for his contributions, including as a consultant to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization on cut flower production in Asia, Africa and Latin America. He is survived by son Thomas and daughter Marian.
