Thomas E. Dunham ’52

Thomas E. Dunham ’52 passed away August 27, 2015, at home after an extended illness. Ted was born in Richmond, Virginia, on October 8, 1928. For the first 11 years of his life he lived in Geneva, Switzerland, returning to the United States in 1939. He graduated from Kent School (Connecticut) in 1947 and entered Dartmouth. Ted’s college career was interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy, and he returned to graduate in 1956 with a degree in English. Ted began flying at age 16 and was a passionate pilot his whole life. At age 18 he joined the Marines, where he stayed for two years before college. In 1950 he left Dartmouth to join the Navy as a pilot attached to VC-4, an all-weather night squadron aboard the USS Wasp. In 1954 he married Joan Ellis of Ventnor City, New Jersey. After college he joined the international division of Mobil Oil in 1956. His first assignment was in Yaounde, Cameroon, then Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo, for a year and a half. Finally, he moved to Denmark and Sweden, still with Mobil Oil. In 1966 Ted joined Nordson SA as its European director in Brussels, Belgium, returning to the United States in 1977. He also started and managed a number of other businesses in his exciting and peripatetic career. Ted is survived by Joan, daughter Karen, son Brian, daughter-in-law Wynne and two granddaughters.
