Stephen White Winship ’41

Stephen White Winship ’41 died October 14, 2011, at Havenwood in Concord, New Hampshire. Steve was born and raised in Concord and remained in New Hampshire throughout his life. At Dartmouth Steve was in the Marching Band, on the Interfraternity Council, and a member of Junto and Tabard/Sigma Chi. In World War II he served the U.S. Navy on destroyers in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Following the war he began his long newsman career as a journalist for the New York Herald Tribune and then as a freelance journalist in Europe. In the 1950s he returned to New Hampshire, where he founded a travel magazine, The New England Guide. He also published several books, including the history of Concord, and wrote a column on New Hampshire’s history, “At the River’s Bend,” for the Concord Monitor from 1983 to 2005. Steve served on numerous community boards devoted to New England culture and on the boards of many charitable organizations. Steve was also a devoted Dartmouth alumnus who served as class president (2001-06), chair of the reunion committee (2001-01), class newsletter editor (1977-82), class secretary (1972-77) and club president (1961-62) and was involved in many other alumni activities. Steve lost his first wife, Marion, and then married Lucy Hawkes and became a father to her three children. Lucy ably assisted him for the next 40 years, especially in many Dartmouth alumni activities. Steve is survived by Lucy, three stepchildren, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
