Stanley Van Den Noort ’51

Stanley Van Den Noort ’51 died on September 16, 2009, at his home in Tustin, California, of complications from a brain injury. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Stan was a chemistry-zoology major and spent two years at Dartmouth’s medical school before finishing at Harvard in 1954. In the same year he married June Le Clere, a Mary Hitchcock nurse, and then served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corp from 1956 to 1958. After two more stops in his medical career he joined the newly created UC-Irvine College of Medicine in 1970 as a professor and chair of neurology. His longtime interest in multiple sclerosis, its causes and successful diagnosis flowered as his hospital became a focus for the dreaded disease and for his well-deserved fame. Surviving Stan besides June are children Eric, Peter, Susanne, Kathy and Betsy; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
