Sherman Lyon Baldwin ’52

Sherman Lyon Baldwin ’52 of Bass River, Massachusetts, passed away on March 5, 2015, at his home after a brief illness. Sherman was born in 1928 in Boston and in his early years lived in Worcester, Massachusetts. He attended Worcester Academy, Kimball Union Academy and Dartmouth. Prior to entering college Sherman served for two years in the U.S. Marine Corps and, before graduating, left Dartmouth during the Korean conflict to re-enter the Marine Corps. Following the service Sherman began his career as a radio announcer for a station in Worcester and later joined the Worcester Telegram & Gazette as a reporter. In August 1954 he married Beth Tucker, and they enjoyed 54 years together until she passed away in 2008. They moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1964 and lived there for 39 years while Sherman worked in the New York City area. He retired from Arcata Graphics in 2003. Sherman was an accomplished athlete, playing football, hockey and baseball throughout school. He was also an avid golfer. Sherman is survived by children Lisa, Anne, Sherman Jr. and Tucker; their spouses; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Sister Sally and friend Monique and her family also survive him. Sherman’s Dartmouth family included his father, class of ’23; grandfather, class of 1894; an uncle, class of ’24; and cousin Charles “Maury” Lyon ’52.
