Seymour Edwin Wheelock ’40

Seymour Edwin Wheelock ’40, M.D., died in Taos, New Mexico, on December 26, 2012. He came to Dartmouth from East Denver High in Colorado and went on to graduate from Northwestern University School of Medicine in 1944. During his junior year at Dartmouth he met Janet Felton, and they were married on September 5, 1942. After medical school he returned to Hanover for an internship at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital and Clinic, followed by residencies in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Children’s Hospital of Denver. He spent six years as a partner in the Children’s Clinic of Denver before serving as assistant chief of pediatrics at Walter Reed Army Hospital, with the rank of major, during the Korean War. In 1956 he rejoined the Children’s Clinic of Denver until 1962, when he returned to Hanover to work at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic until 1966. He then became the director of ambulatory pediatrics and of adolescent pediatric medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Denver for 17 years, retiring in 1983. He received the Dartmouth Alumni Award and the inaugural Seymour E. Wheelock Award from the Dartmouth Association of the Rocky Mountains for distinguished service and served on the Alumni Council. His hobbies included painting watercolors, repairing antique clocks, playing tennis and tracking the history of his archetypal American family back to the arrival of the first Wheelock at Massachusetts in 1638. He is survived by Janet, children Martha and Seymour III ’70 and grandsons Thomas and Whitney.
