Scott Hugh Mitchell ’43
Scott Hugh Mitchell ’43 died June 12, 2013, in Salisbury, North Carolina. Scott graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, where he was a member of the orchestra, band, senior council and tennis team. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was a member of the Green Collegians and Kappa Sigma. During the war Scott served in the 5th Air Force in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. Back home again he returned to Dartmouth and received his master’s from Tuck School in 1946. While at Tuck he married Mary Elizabeth Marks. Following graduation he joined General Electric, where he spent 37 years, 10 in Schenectady, New York; 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio; and seven in Salisbury, North Carolina. He had a variety of responsibilities and ended up in finance. Scott retired in 1983. He played golf almost every day, but his real love was tennis. He usually played doubles, but gave this advice to his partner, “The best test of tennis skill is singles and it should be avoided at all costs.” He coached tennis at Catawba College in Salisbury and was dubbed “Father Tennis” by the Salisbury Post. Scott was known for his quick wit, dry sense of humor and his gentlemanly manner. When not on the tennis court, he could be found reading, working on crossword puzzles or helping young people. Scott’s wife, Mary, died in 1998. He is survived by his children Martha, Scott, Beth, Stuart, John and Keith and their families, including seven grandchildren.
