Sandra Joy Piscatelli Gatt ’84

Sandra Joy Piscatelli Gatt ’84, M.D., of Skillman, New Jersey, passed away on August 2, 2013, at home surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. Sandy came to Dartmouth from Holmdel, New Jersey, where she was the valedictorian of the Holmdel High School class of 1980. In 1984 Sandy graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth with a concentration in biology. While at Dartmouth she enjoyed skiing, singing and partaking in the many rich traditions of her alma mater, most memorably Winter Carnival and the graduation passing of the peace pipe. Sandy went on to graduate with distinction from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her general surgery residency at Rutgers University and her plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California. A relative pioneer when few women and mothers entered the field, she became a respected, compassionate and beloved plastic and reconstructive surgeon, specializing in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, expertly and empathetically restoring the bodies and psyches of those who were ravaged by breast cancer. She is survived by her parents, Janet and Andrew, sister Pamela and brother Andrew and their families, sons C.J. (18) and Taylor (16) and husband Charles.
