Samuel Burtner Ulrich ’62

Samuel Burtner Ulrich ’62 died at home in Randolph, Vermont, on October 5, 2012. He came to Dartmouth from Hamden (Connecticut), where he was active in student government and managed the basketball team. At Dartmouth he was a member of Zeta Psi, president of Germania and served on the student vestry of St. Thomas’s Church, graduating in 1963. Burt graduated from Berkeley Divinity School in 1967 and commenced upon a life in the clergy of the Episcopal Church. He was ordained to the priesthood in late 1967 and became an assistant rector at St. John’s Church in Getty Square at Yonkers, New York, the start of a long relationship for the man and place. He became active in the community life of his city, serving from 1974 to 1978 as the president of “Clergy of Yonkers,” comprised of interested clergy of all denominations. Burt was instrumental in founding organizations that supported persons who were mentally ill, young, old and disenfranchised. In 1981 he was installed as the 25th rector of St. John’s. From 1983 to 1989 Burt was appointed by Gov. Mario Cuomo to the board of visitors of the Rockland Psychiatric Center. He received numerous public awards for his work dealing with food and shelter for the homeless and fostering support groups and outreach programs dealing with substance abuse, HIV-AIDS, job training and housing. In 1998 Yonkers renamed an important street Reverend S. Burtner Ulrich Lane. Burt retired in 2006. He is survived by brothers William and Peter.
