Robert Wright Garver ’55

Robert Wright Garver ’55 died on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on July 12, 2012. A graduate of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, Illinois, Bob attended Dartmouth on a Navy scholarship. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and rowed crew. Bob served on an icebreaker with two Arctic and one Antarctic tour during his naval time. He returned to Harvard Business School, where he obtained an M.B.A. Bob joined Continental Illinois Bank in Chicago, but in 1968 he and his wife, Judy, decided they wanted to raise their children in New England, and he joined the Charlestown Savings Bank in Peabody, Massachusetts, where he eventually became president and chairman of the board. After retiring in 1986, Bob became involved in real estate on Hilton Head in addition to volunteering at the hospital and serving as a driver for Friends with Wheels. An active member of the rowing club and a barbershop group, he also served his church as the finance chairman and a leader in the ministry program. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son and seven grandchildren. Bob was very active in College activities, serving as a mini-reunion chair, class agent and in several positions in Dartmouth clubs.
