Robert T. Dennis ’57

Robert T. Dennis ’57 passed away in Boston, Virginia, on February 10, 2014. He suffered from progressive supranuclear palsy. He lived in Flint Hill, Virginia. Bob grew up in the Washington, D.C., area and came to Dartmouth from George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia, in 1953. At Dartmouth he was a geology major and belonged to Phi Kappa Psi, the Dartmouth Outing Club, Winter Carnival Committee, Cabin & Trail and Bait & Bullet. He earned a master’s in geology from Johns Hopkins University in 1960. Bob had a long career as an environmentalist in the private and public sectors. He was a founder and president for many years of the Piedmont Environmental Council, which stopped the development of a theme park adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park. Bob was also instrumental in helping many landowners put their properties in conservation easements, to protect the land from development. He was passionate about environmental causes and was an energetic natural resources policy professional. His hobbies included hunting and a number of other outdoor activities as part of his family’s rural lifestyle. Bob leaves his wife, Barbara, son James and daughter Susan.
