Robert Stewart Teaze ’47

Robert Stewart Teaze ’47 of San Diego died on August 19, 2014. He was born September 26, 1925, in Tokyo, Japan, where his parents worked for Standard Oil. He was fluent in Japanese and returned to the United States in 1940. He attended La Jolla and Point Loma high schools before graduating from Deerfield Academy in 1943. He started college in June of 1943 and joined the Army in November. Because of his fluency in Japanese he was sent to military intelligence language schools at the University of Michigan and Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was commissioned and served in Tokyo from 1945 to 1947. He returned, majored in philosophy, graduated in 1949 and joined the U.S. State Department. Robert served as a code clerk in Vietnam and Hong Kong and as an investigator with the U.S. embassy in Tokyo. He completed an L.L.B. at Hastings School of Law in San Francisco in 1958. He joined the San Diego city attorney’s office, where he rose to become assistant city attorney. He was instrumental in the approval and construction of the San Diego Chargers’ NFL football stadium. He was an Alumni Fund volunteer from 1958 to 1988. His father was a member of the class of 1918. He is survived by three children.
