Robert G. Hustek ’51

Robert G. Hustek ’51, who died in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on February 12, will be remembered for a life of giving to others through countless acts of concern, compassion and kindness. This central focus can be seen in his career as an inner-city high school teacher and coach, mentor to young people, generous volunteer and the originator and implementer of an imaginative program by which the class of ’51 expressed its thanks to Dartmouth employees and Hanover residents for their kindness to Dartmouth students. Bob was honored by his class with its Spirit of ’51 Award, which recognized these qualities and especially his trailblazing leadership of the ’51 class projects committee. Class funds were used to make it possible for policemen, firemen, hospital workers and others to attend Dartmouth plays, concerts and athletic events. Area children were provided with ski instruction. Bob and his late wife, Kathy, were often on hand to personally greet and thank these guests. The College recognized Bob and his class with three special awards. Bob is also remembered for his excellence on the basketball court. He captained Dartmouth’s team in 1951. A highlight of that season was a victory over heavily favored Holy Cross, led by All-American Bob Cousy. Forty-five years later, Bob was named Outstanding Athlete among Bridgeport Old Timers. At Dartmouth Bob was a member of Sphinx, Phi Kappa Psi and Kappa Phi Kappa, the professional education fraternity.
