Robert Ernest Holmes ’47

Robert Ernest Holmes ’47 of Canaan, Connecticut, died on September 6, 2012. He grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, and attended high school in Norwalk. He enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to Dartmouth in the V-12 program. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and completed a combined Tuck-Thayer degree. After further training as a pilot, he worked at a control tower in North Carolina. After service he was chief engineer for the Benrus Watch Co. in Waterbury, Connecticut, from 1951 to 1965. He later worked in Morris, Connecticut, for Bavier Bulger and Goodrich as vice president in manufacturing consulting. He served on the board of directors of Infodex Inc. from 1985 to 1991. For many years he volunteered with the Boy Scouts and in church vestry work. His hobbies included playing pool and fly fishing. He served as club secretary (1955-68) and as a club district enrollment director (1961-70). He was predeceased by his wife of 35 years and is survived by a son and a daughter.
