Robert David Leffert ’55

Robert David Leffert ’55 died at Massachusetts General Hospital on December 7, 2008, of complications from melanoma. He was a member of the camera club, Dartmouth College Union, Handel Society and The Daily Dartmouth. Bob attended Tufts University and received an M.D. in 1958. He married Linda, a lawyer, the following year and had children Lisa ’84 and Adam. A Naval reservist, Bob after residency served in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968 and was assigned a tour with the 3rd and 1st Marine divisions in Vietnam. Upon discharge he worked at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City until 1972, when he returned to Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital. He became chief of rehabilitation and surgical chief of the upper extremity, teaching at Harvard Medical School and as a professor of orthopedic surgery in 1991. More than 70 publications in orthopedics are attributed to him.
