Robert Allen Farmer ’60

Robert Allen Farmer ’60 died of pancreatic cancer on July 22. He is survived by his former wife, Mary Ellen, two brothers, husband Tom and adopted son Thieu Nguyen. Bob grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, graduating from the University High School. At Dartmouth Bob was significantly engaged in college life. He majored in government and served as a class officer in his freshman and sophomore years, serving as class president in 1957-58. In addition to being a member of the Phi Tau and Phi Sigma Kappa, he served multiple terms on the Undergraduate Council and the Interfraternity Council and was an active member of the Pre-Law Club, presaging his acceptance to Harvard Law School, where he earned his J.D. while founding and operating a small educational publishing company. As an alumnus Bob remained engaged, serving as co-chair of the 50th reunion giving committee, chair of the reunion giving committee in 2001 and a regular volunteer for the annual Dartmouth College Fund campaigns.Though Bob described himself as having had six careers, he is best known as a political fundraiser for the Democratic Party, having served as treasurer and chief for presidential candidates John Anderson, John Glenn, Mike Dukakis, Bill Clinton and John Kerry. He is remembered by Bill Clinton as “a kind, generous man, a loyal friend and a passionate advocate for the causes he believed in.” With his passing his classmates and the College have lost a man of uncommon talent, authenticity, passion and achievement.
