Robbins Woolcott Barstow Jr. ’41
Robbins Woolcott Barstow Jr. ’41 died peacefully in his home of 60 years in Avery Heights, Connecticut, on November 10, 2010. At Dartmouth he was a member of the Forensic Union, Canoe Club, Cabin & Trail, Dartmouth Christian Fellowship and Dartmouth Outing Club. After graduation from Dartmouth Robbins devoted his entire career to public education, receiving a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut in 1967. For 34 years he held the position of director of professional development for the Connecticut Educational Association. As in his undergraduate days, he was a passionate advocate for many social and environmental causes, including the civil rights movement and, most notably, as a world leader in the “save the whales” movement. Robbins was also a lifelong amateur movie producer whose Internet films gained thousands of fans. His travel film, Disneyland Dream, was one of the few family films to be selected for the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret “Meg,” three children, four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
